THROUGHOUT the day a stream of mourners visited a Risca church to pay their respects to the four friends.

St Margaret's Church was open all day, and people went to pray for the families, light candles and sign a book of condolence.

The Venerable John Blackburn, vicar of Risca, said the church would remain open for the week.

"I think people want to do something. They want to express in a very tangible way their sympathy and support for the families.

"Writing a message in a book is something people can do very easily and simply, but with great sincerity and warmth.

"Risca as a community is very aware of itself, and when these things happen people here feel a great solidarity with each other.

"When I was told of this terrible tragedy I immediately felt that the church should express its care and concern and condolences to the family and friends of the four young men."

Among the visitors were Allan Maddocks and his wife Beryl, whose niece Jodie Sefton was Mr Brooks's partner.

Mr Maddocks said: "He was a quiet lad, a family man who loved his children and girlfriend.

"He loved his fishing, but as it happens that was his downfall." Mrs Maddocks also knew the Harding brothers' father Chris. She said: "They were his only children. It's terrible. I feel sorry for all the families."

By 4pm yesterday more than 50 messages were left in the book of condolence.

One read: "Can't believe we are never going to see your faces again walking through the door. Thinking of you always, our best mates."

The message was signed: 'Darren, Rachael and Family'. Another read: "Good boys who will be sadly missed. Gone but not forgotten. Karl, Jayne and family."

One addressed to Mr Hill read: "Geraint, we will miss you so much. Good night, God bless, love you always. Auntie Pam and Uncle 'B'."
