THE Labour party last night refused to comment after the Argus revealed rebel Blaenau Gwent Assembly Member Peter Law may yet stand against them in the General Election.

Less than two weeks ago Mr Law - who has battled with Labour over its policy of all-women shortlists that saw Maggie Jones picked as the parliamentary candidate for Blaenau Gwent - cancelled the launch of his election campaign when diagnosed with a tumour.

But yesterday Mr Law hinted at a speedy return to the race for Parliament in later editions of yesterday's Argus.

He said: "There is a great upswell of feeling here in Blaenau Gwent - people are telling me they feel they've been robbed of choice and an opportunity to make their feelings known."

The Welsh Labour Party expelled Mr Law when it seemed he was going to launch a campaign against them, but invited him back when he withdrew from the race due to his illness.

But last night, despite repeated approaches, it refused to comment.

But the public gave their support to Mr Law.

David Watkins, 46, from Ebbw Vale, said: "Peter Law has done a great job - I feel he's fought for the people."

Lyn Bateman, 55, from Risca, said: "Why shouldn't he stand? We know he is very popular around here."

Kay Jones, 63, from Abercarn, said: "Everybody has been following this story.

"I think he has a lot of support because he has been a very good AM for the area."

However, Jocelyn Davies, AM, expressed worry, saying: "If I had just had major surgery I'm not sure I would want to run an election campaign.

"I wish him all the best but I wouldn't encourage him."
