A GWENT pub landlord wants his regulars and fellow residents to help him call time on motorists who, he claims, flout the speed limit.

Paul Barrow, landlord of the Wentwood Inn, near Caerwent, on the busy A48, told the Argus he wanted action following a two-car crash near the pub which injured two people.

It is not known whether speed was a contributory factor in last week's incident - an investigation by Gwent Police is ongoing.

On the same night 21-year-old Chepstow driver John Edwards died when his car left the road at Pwllmeyric, also on the A48. That incident is also under investigation.

Mr Barrow told the Argus the stretch of road near his pub was "hazardous", and claimed he and other residents regularly saw motorists and lorry drivers going past at "phenomenal speeds", despite a 50mph speed limit.

He added: "We have been here two years, and there have been three accidents in that time.

"Common sense says it cannot be safe for vehicles to fly down the road in the way they do. The road is a nightmare at times.

"We want a speed camera deployed permanently, and will be asking the local authority to look at the speed limit."

Monmouth council's deputy leader, Councillor Graham Down, said the local authority was "certainly willing to listen to whatever concerns people have".

A police spokeswoman said there had been "one fatal accident and one slight collision" within a mile of the pub between 2002 and 2004. She added: "All camera sites are assessed by the Safety Camera Partnership following a review of the statistics.

"If the latest accident means the site meets the partnership's criteria, there would be a review."

l A blue Jeep Cherokee and a red Land Rover Freelander collided near the Wentwood Inn at about 9.40pm on Tuesday, May 24. One man and one woman were taken to Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital for treatment.

The woman is said to be "comfortable" and the man was described as "walking wounded". Neither were said to have "life-threatening" injuries. Gwent Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident. To contact them call 01633 838111.
