A magnificent spell of three wickets for one run in five balls by Panteg's England A seamer David Harrison, pictured below, propelled defending champions Glamorgan into second place in the totesport League First Division last night.

His devastating fifth over, the ninth of the Worcestershire innings, turned the game on its head and enabled the Welsh county to celebrate their first game under their new £250,000 Sophia Gardens floodlights with a 53-run win.

Worcestershire looked favourites to win and condemn Glamorgan to a second successive totesport defeat to add to five County Championship reversals when they reached 35-0 from just five overs, chasing Glamorgan's 227 (45 overs) total on a good pitch.

But skipper Vikram Solanki, an England one-day squad member, was then out to an irresponsible shot, charging seamer Andrew Davies and nicking a catch to wicketkeeper Mark Wallace for a powerfully struck 19.

Three overs later Harrison compounded Solanki's stupidity by producing his amazing spell before finishing with figures of 5-33 in 8.4 overs.

With his second ball he produced a beauty which cut back off the pitch to bowl opener Stephen Moore for 17.

Two balls later he captured the prized wicket of former England batsman Graeme Hick, who was caught behind cutting, and the very next ball a steeply rising delivery accounted for Ben Smith, caught by Mike Powell at first slip.

From 35-0, Worcestershire had slumped to 40-4 and though South African Zander de Bruyn scored 51 from 82 balls before being brilliantly run out by Dean Cosker, Worcestershire had insufficient batting to recover and were all out for 174.

Glamorgan captain Robert Croft took his 216th wicket in the one-day league - a new Glamorgan record - when bowling Ray Price for three, overtaking Abergavenny's Malcolm Nash's 215.

Glamorgan had been given an excellent start by openers Croft and Matthew Elliot after winning the toss and batting.

The pair put on 79 in 15.2 overs before Croft was caught behind for 34 (five boundaries) to begin an all to familiar collapse.

Australian Elliott went 20 runs later, unluckily playing on to Kabir Ali for 43 (eight boundaries) and soon 99-1 became 109-4.

Newport's Ian Thomas was run out for 12 and then Mike Powell was brilliantly caught one-handed at midwicket for two by Stephen Moore.

After that David Hemp kept the innings together with an unbeaten 65 in 75 balls with seven boundaries, but the total didn't look enough in the absence of Simon Jones on Test duty and the injured Alex Wharf.

Despite the win, Glamorgan obviously need new overseas signing and Indian Test captain Sourav Ganguly, not only to bolster their bid to avoid relegation from the County Championship First Division, but also to shore up their middle order in the shorter game.
