EVERY weekend children at a Gwent nursery take it in turns to take their beloved teddy bear Spencer home with them and then write about his adventures.

But now Spencer is on his biggest adventure yet, after he was dropped in a shop and accidentally sold.

Three-year-old Jasmine Dunn, of Abercarn, was looking after Abercarn Nursery's lovable bear when she dropped him in Cwmbran's Poundland store on Saturday.

Mum Joanne said: "When we realised Jasmine didn't have Spencer we went back into the store to look for him.

"We had only been out a couple of minutes, but the girl on the tills said she had sold him. She thought he was from the store. "Jasmine is very upset. We have told her Spencer had gone to play with a friend."

Mrs Dunn, 34, a medical secretary at Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital, is on placement at Abercarn Primary School as part of the teaching assistant course she is studying.

She said: "The children take Spencer home for the weekends and they have to write about his adventures.

"I have had a terrible ribbing about it in school. I have even had answerphone messages with people singing Teddy Bears' Picnic. "Jasmine is very upset and would be grateful if the person who purchased Spencer would be kind enough to accept a refund and return him."

Spencer is beige in colour with a burgundy scarf and his name is embroidered on his foot.

He was originally a gift donated to the school by Marks & Spencer, but the line is not made any more.

A spokeswoman for Poundland said: "We are really sorry that Spencer was sold by mistake. The cashier is mortified. She thought it was an item of our stock."

The store is asking whoever bought the bear to contact them and they will give a refund, as well as £10 vouchers to spend in store.
