HERE'S an event worth getting steamed up over .... The Rotary Club of Abergavenny stages its annual Steam, Veteran and Vintage Rally this Sunday and Monday in the town's Bailey Park.

The charity event is one of the biggest fundraisers in South Wales. And this year's show promises to be bigger and better than ever, according to organisers.

Last year 15 large steam engines, six steam-rollers, 219 vintage and veteran cars, 75 motorcycles and a large number of military and commercial vehicles were on display.

Other highlights included a 1930 Standard - the only roadworthy one of its kind in the world - owned by the Brown family of Raglan, and a 1955 Mercury Tug engine exhibited by 14-year-old Joseph Willson, of Goytre. Children's favourite Old Britannia may not be appearing at this year's show, though, as a result of old age and wear and tear.

Henri Collings's 40-ton mighty steamer has always been a highlight at the show with the traditional tug of war between the engine and hundreds of children.

Unfortunately, as Mr Collings was checking the 90-year-old trooper in time for the Bank Holiday event, he noticed cracks in the spokes of one wheel. If steam's not your thing, then you'll still find plenty to do.

There will be a birds of prey show and a spectacular motorcycle display team taking to the arena.

Can-can dancers, youth theatre and an escape artists are also set to entertain audiences.

Plus, there'll be plenty for children to do, traditional craft stalls and don't miss the mouth-watering food village.

Children get in free, OAPs and teenagers pay £3 and adults £5, with all proceeds going to charity.
