DRIVE down the winding country lane to Goldcliff and you cannot miss the Farmers Arms, at Goldcliff, Newport, a comfortable rural pub near the Gwent Levels.

An enclosed children's playground is in front of the car park, and inside you will receive a warm and friendly welcome from the staff.

We had booked a table, although when we first arrived, early on a Friday evening, we thought this had not been necessary. But the pub soon began to fill up with diners of all ages.

As well as the menu, which included typical pub fare, vegetarian dishes and a children's range, there were also specials on the board. We only had one starter as I was saving myself for the main course, but I did pinch a couple of my partner's deep-fried mushrooms with a mayonnaise dip.

They were piping hot, and so moreish I began to wish I had a plateful to myself.

For our main courses we selected a rump steak with a baked potato, and a mixed grill - steak, bacon, sausage, black pudding - which was served with a generous helping of thickly cut chips.

With a pint of beer and a glass of red wine, the bill came to a very satisfying £20.60.

Just one word of warning - the pub does not accept credit or debit cards, so make sure you have some cash on you.

But this was a very satisfying way to start the weekend. The Farmer's Arms is well worth a visit. Jane Helmich
