GLAMORGAN'S Gwent-based batsman Mike Powell and seam bowler David Harrison can still force themselves into the England reckoning this summer, says county chief executive Mike Fatkin and coach John Derrick.

Both were yesterday left out of the England 25-man development squad from which the teams for the summer Ashes series against Australia and one-day internationals will be chosen.

Clubmates Simon Jones and Alex Wharf were included, as expected, but Powell and Harrison did not do well enough on the England A winter tour in Sri Lanka to be included.

Robert Key (Kent), Ian Bell (Warwickshire) and Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire) are now in front of Powell and John Lewis (Gloucestershire) and Chris Tremlett (Hampshire) ahead of Harrison.

"The 25-man squad is exactly as I would have expected on current form with no surprises," said Fatkin, "but it is not set in stone.

"Both Mike and David might have hoped to be included but it is up to them to score runs and take wickets respectively this summer and get noticed again.

"The squad is something for them to aspire towards and they are still young and capable.

"The squad is likely to be amended for the winter tours so if they go well this summer they can play a future part with England."

Derrick said: "Mike has not had much time in the middle so far this summer. Before both county championship matches the weather prevented us having outdoor nets the day before and that didn't help the batsmen.

"But Mike is the type of player who, once he gets one big score, will go on and make others.

"David did not have much luck in those early games (his one wicket has cost 190 runs) but he was our best bowler in the one-day win over Nottinghamshire (3-25 from eight overs) and it is only a matter of time before he is regularly among the wickets again."
