NEWPORT band Big John are fast proving themselves contenders on the local scene.

The band has just recorded a new demo, also called Big John, which they will promote with a series of gigs over coming months.

Big John was recorded in a day at Le Mons studios on Albany Trading Estate taking advantage of the owner Chris McDonnaugh's '20 hours for £300' offer.

"Although it's left us all skint for the month it does now mean that there's a bit more to offer from Big John," said band member Matthew Pimm. "The songs are still far from polished but sound pretty close to how they sound live."

Big John play indie pop which is blessed with intricate melodies and delicate song arrangements.

It's got elements of the old Sarah records gang and even a bit of Spiritualised's Lazer Guided Melodies.

"We are still at the moment focusing on playing gigs in Newport, trying to gather some interest and coverage locally before moving further afield," says Matthew. "The gigs, however, are few and far between in Newport due to the limited venues that allow live music, especially for bands performing their own material.

"Also with rock and punk dominating the local scene we are very much out there on our own at the moment."

Big John play the Riverside Tavern, Newport, on Wednesday, May 11, with a fellow Newport band. And on Saturday, June 25, they are pencilled in to support a Clash tribute band in TJ's, Newport. For more info surf to www.bigjohnband.com.
