IN one of the biggest political upheavals of all time Peter Law snatched Blaenau Gwent from Labour in yesterday's General Election.
Nevertheless, Tony Blair was today celebrating an historic third term in government, albeit with a substantially red-uced majority.
The Prime Minister was given another bloody nose in Gwent when Conservative David Davies won Monmouth from Labour's Huw Edwards. However, it was Mr Law's landslide victory - just weeks after surgery to remove a brain tumour - which proved to be the most significant win of the day.
He polled 20,505 votes, crushing Labour's Maggie Jones and giving him a majority of 9,121.
Meanwhile Mr Blair said Labour now had to 'focus on the things that matter' such as the NHS, jobs and law and order.
Conservative leader Michael Howard congratulated him on Labour's win but said it was time for the Prime Minister to deliver on his promises. This morning Mr Law said:'This is what you get when you don't listen to people. That is the point of the results here.'
