A MOB of up to 150 people went on the rampage in a quiet Newport street, overturning a police car and damaging parked vehicles.

Residents of Woodland Road, Maindee, were woken by screaming and shouting at 3.30am yesterday.

Resident Andy Hynes, 39, a solicitor, said: "I came out to have a look at what caused the noise and there were streams of people coming down the road.

"They were swearing and shouting and attacking cars. It was nuts.

"I couldn't believe they were out so late. There was at least 150 of them and they were all young adults."

The gang attacked a number of cars, scratching the paint and knocking off wing mirrors.

Sales manager Tim O'Sullivan, 30, had his two cars damaged.

The wing mirror on one was kicked off, and the wing mirror on his company car was also smashed.

He said repairs could cost him up to £500.

"I'm really angry more than anything," he said.

"This is a quiet road and you don't expect this sort of thing."

Another resident, a woman who did not want to be named, said she saw the crowd move past her house, shouting and swearing and snapping wing mirrors.

She said: "They all had drinks with them, cans, bottles and glasses, and some were throwing them around. It was very frightening."

Inspector Gareth Beak, of Gwent police, said officers were called to a house party in the street and saw the large crowd when they arrived.

The officers were not near the car when it was overturned. He said inquiries were ongoing.

"We have had some report of damage to vehicles from residents which will also be investigated."

He said police had made no arrests.

Beechwood councillor David Hando said: "We have had anti-social behaviour before but nothing like this. I am shocked and clearly we are very concerned."
