Glamorgan fast bowler David Harrison, pictured, has been given a glowing reference by his Australian teammate Matthew Elliott.

Elliott believes the Panteg product is one of the best young bowlers in county cricket whose only failing is his inconsistency.

"I agree with Michael Kasprowicz that Dave is the perfect young cricketer," Elliott said. "Dave has already proved himself against the best batsmen in county cricket.

"He just needs to be more consistent - sometimes if batsmen get on top of him he can let his head drop, but he's young and is still learning."

Elliott added: "This is a big year for Glamorgan after winning promotion into the First Division of the County Championship last summer. We need to score more runs than last season and that will ease the pressure on our bowlers."

Harrison was Glamorgan's leading wicket-taker and player of the year last season after capturing 88 Second Division County Championship wickets at 21.76.

Elliott is certain that he will again spearhead Glamorgan's push for honours in all competitions this summer and win his first England Test cap within the next two years.

"I think Dave can play international cricket in the next couple of years. He just needs to keep working hard and back his ability as he leads the Glamorgan attack this summer," Elliott said.

"He is good enough to take wickets for England in both Test and one-day cricket."

The announcement of Australia's Ashes squad earlier this year has all but ended Elliott's international career.

He arrived at Sophia Gardens this week on the back of his worst domestic season 'Down Under' since making his debut in 1992-93.

Elliott scored just 585 four-day Pura Cup runs at 30.78 for Victoria this winter - despite reaching fifty on five occasions.

But his form was more encouraging in the one-day ING Cup. He cracked 393 runs at 39.30 from ten matches. He also smashed a blistering double hundred for his club at the end of last month.

"As a team we don't really have any weaknesses," Elliott said.

"But if we go into this season thinking we should just consolidate our position in the First Division of the County Championship for a few years first, we will struggle.

"If our young players step up and take more responsibility, there is no reason why we can't have a sustained period of success."
