Special women-only packages are to go on sale for increasing numbers who want to travel on their own. The Independent Traveller tour company aims its trips "at small groups of like-minded individuals". Managing director Rosemary Sloggett believes she is filling a gap in the market. She said: "Women are eager to experience different countries and cultures, but may have reservations about doing so alone. "Our holidays have been designed to suit them, comprising exotic destinations, quality accommodation, a well-paced, exciting itinerary, and travelling companions with a shared outlook." The first tours will take place in September to Marrakech and South Africa, with others to follow in 2006 to destinations including South Africa, India, Hong Kong, Nepal and Canada. Tours will include polar bear watching, trekking, wildlife safaris and a visit to the National Women's Commission in Nepal.

Great outdoors THE chance to learn new skills like footpath-laying, drystone walling and helping with a sheep count are some of the activities being offered by the National Trust on its 2005 Working Holidays Programme. The trust says the holidays offer the chance to meet new people, get outdoors, learn about the environment and help with conservation work. Those taking part will get access to some of the country's most treasured historic homes, countryside and gardens. Holidays this year include taking part in a dig, helping plant over bedding displays, and cleaning a beach. You can stay in farmhouses, cottages and even a former Ministry of Defence radar station.
