PUPILS were today saying prayers for a tragic teenager who fell to her death from a theme park ride a year ago.

Hayley Williams, 16, of Broadway, Pontypool, died after falling from the Hydro ride at Oakwood Park in Pembrokeshire a year ago today. Her death sent shockwaves through the community and among her fellow pupils at St Alban's RC High School.

Last year an emotional memorial service was held at the school for pupils when they returned, and tributes were paid to a "talented youngster" who would have had a bright future.

Hundreds packed into Merchants Hill Baptist Church, Pontnewynydd, for her funeral, and her favourite band, Westlife, paid tribute by sending a wreath.

Popular Hayley, a keen musician and talented singer, had been enjoying an Easter break with family members ahead of her GCSE exams when tragedy struck.

Head of St Albans Mike Coady said the school had made no plans for a special memorial service. But he added: "Pupils have been remembering Hayley at various times throughout the year, and they will be using the chapel to pay their respects today.

"Our new prize for outstanding contributions to music was awarded posthumously to Hayley in December, because she was one of the strongest candidates."

The prize has now been officially named the Hayley Williams Award for outstanding contributions to music.

Her family will have to wait a little longer for an explanation as to why she died, as no date has yet been set for her inquest hearing, which was opened and adjourned.

A spokesman for the Pembrok-eshire coroner said he had "expressed concern" about the length of time the investigation into Hayley's death was taking.

He said: "The coroner would like to know what stage inquiries are at, as he is very keen to hold an inquest."

Dyfed Powys Police confirmed a joint investigation by its officers and the ongoing.
