A FORMER professional super-featherweight boxer was jailed for 12 months for a series of car clocking offences.

Gareth Jordan, 33, of Elms Road, Raglan, pleaded guilty to 13 sample charges under the 1968 Trade Descriptions Act of selling cars by deception and falsifying car records.

The court was told Jordan regularly reduced the mileage on cars he sold, falsely advertised them and then provided buyers with concocted service histories.

In most cases he used phoney names, telephone numbers and addresses to buy the cars, the court heard.

His activities spanned the country as he sold cars from his Raglan home to people in Inverness, the Isle of Wight, Essex, Herefordshire, Gloucester and the Midlands.

Monmouthshire county council's trading standards officer, Vivian Price, said she was first alerted to Jordan's dealings in February 2002, when a colleague in Hereford suggested he was advertising cars for sale in a local newspaper without declaring he was a trader.

Further investigations indicated that a string of other offences were attributable to Jordan.

Mr Price gathered evidence to suggest that the cars were reduced in mileage by at least 2,953,999 miles in total.

It was estimated that Jordan made at least £107,880 from the scam. "This was a very long and drawn-out inquiry where many members of the public had been misled by an unscrupulous individual," said Mr Price after the case.

"I sympathise with the people who bought 'clocked' cars from Jordan because the court was unable to award any compensation. I hope the case will serve as a warning to any other 'clockers'."

Jordan's boxing career spanned ten years until 2002. He had an impressive record in 21 fights racking up 17 wins - eight of them knockouts.
