THERE'S something of the Roxy Musics about Kaiser Chiefs, who are a vocal-led, retro 80s rock band.

The high camp and theatrics of Thatcher's decade fit very well into Kaiser Chiefs' flamboyant world.

Roxy Music were doing it ten years earlier and now Kaiser Chiefs are doing it twenty years later.

They've had success - their first single Oh My God reached number 66 and the follow-up I Predict A Riot nearly made the Top 20.

Universal has signed them up to release music in Japan and America where they were played on influential radio station KROQ.

They released their debut album Employment last month and next week they finish off their first UK headline tour.

Employment was produced by Blur producer Stephen Street and indeed it does sound like that band doing an 80s impression.

An art-rock bed of exuberant vocals, guitar lines, and moments on the keyboard builds throughout to surprisingly feel-good moments like the guitar solo on Na Na Na Na Naa which ends up sounding like Brian Eno on Another Green World.

Kaiser Chiefs started 2005 as a support band with Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand benefiting from their start-up on the NME tour which called on Cardiff Uni.

On Thursday, April 21, the band headlines the same venue. The band, who named themselves after a successful South African football team, were school friends.

They are: Ricky Wilson (vocals), Andrew 'Whitey' White (guitar), Simon Rix (bass), Nick 'Peanut' Baines (keyboard), and Nick Hodgson (drums and vocals).
