CHRISTIE Evans had to overcome fierce competition to be crowned Cwmbran Carnival Queen at the town's stadium this weekend.
Christie, 17, said: "I was completely shocked when they announced that I'd won. I couldn't believe it.
"My mum came down to the stadium to watch me, and she was so happy when they said that I'd won."
As well as working at Holland and Barrett health shop, Christie plays for Llanyrafon netball team, and also enjoys swimming for relaxation. Many people have congratulated her.
"My friends and family have all called to congratulate me," she said. Christie beat 14 other contestants to claim top spot, and has twice won the carnival's junior category in previous years.
"I won the Quarter Tender category when I was 14 and 15, but never thought I'd win this."
