IF GWENT'S Aimee de Gruchy-Lambert wins the prestigious Texaco Young Musician of the Year competition, it will be a real family affair.

The 18-year-old flautist, from Machen, who is currently studying at Brasenose College in Oxford University, will play against four other finalists to win the coveted title later this month.

And on the night, her father, William, will accompany her on the piano and her brother Daniel will play as the winner from last year while the judges make their decision. Aimee will play two solo pieces while getting the chance to perform with the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra.

"I cannot wait to play with the orchestra. It is very exciting," she said. The talented youngster will play Carmen's Fantasy arranged by Bourne and, with the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Michael Ball, a flute concerto by Jacques Bert.

Her mum, Heidi, a cello player, composer and singer, said: "I think it would be a first if two siblings win consecutive competitions.

"We are so proud of Aimee. As long as she enjoys herself, that's all that matters. If she wins, then that's good too."

Aimee has just started her music degree in Oxford University after winning a scholarship.

She passed her grade eight recorder exam with distinction at the age of 12 and her flute grade eight, with distinction, at 13 years of age.

She has won the most promising woodwind player three years running in the South Glamorgan Young Musician competition from the age of 10 to 13 years.

The flautist also won the Gamlins most outstanding musician in 2001. She said: "I am really looking forward to the finals. Playing in front of a lot of people, and with the orchestra, will be great.

"My practises have gone well and I am confident with the pieces now - it's just memorising them," she said.

The competition takes place on Saturday, April 23, at the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff.

The winner will receive £1,000 and the Texaco Young Musician Wales trophy.

Tickets for the final cost £10. Call 029 2064 6900 for details on how to book your seats.
