A CONMAN who pocketed money while supposedly collecting for the tsunami appeal called on at least 80 households, police say.

Following an exclusive story in the Argus last Thursday, Ebbw Vale police station was flooded with calls about the despicable incidents.

A man carried out door-to-door calls in the King Street area of Cwm around 5pm on Monday, and 2.45pm on Tuesday last week.

He claimed he was acting on behalf of the Central Garage, in Blaina, who were conducting their own legitimate appeal.

Police carried out an inquiry after it occurred to them that the garage manager, Dawn Legge, had not asked anyone to go out collecting for them.

PC Mike Smith, crime and disorder reduction officer for Ebbw Vale police, said: "We know that he called to quite a few houses in the Cwm area.

"It seems the culprit was using a book to get people to sign to say how much they had given to make it look more official. Somebody who donated money and signed the book estimated there were about three or four sheets full of names, so going on that we believe he called on around 80 people.

"In all probability it is in excess of that because people don't like to admit they have been duped.

"We really don't know how much money was donated in all."

He added: "Following the coverage in the media the calls have been put to a stop, but we are very keen to catch this person."

Descriptions of the suspect vary. He is believed to be between 18 and 20, 5ft 3in to 5ft 7in tall and was wearing a black jacket. Some callers say his hair came to a peak on his forehead.

He was also carrying a bucket covered in wrapping paper.
