THIS brutal all-girl combo give the little boys something to be afraid of in TJ's, Newport next week.

The Wage Of Sin sound like a souped-up version of a late 80s doom band but with torn lace and mascara.

They have thumping percussion and droning bass lines coupled with rapid-fire lead guitar and high-pitched and stomach-curdling vocals (courtesy of Melissa Forabaio) reminiscent of Japanese noise bands Zeni Geva and Ruins.

The apparently feminist band is as much influenced by At The Gates and early Metallica as they are classical music.

The band takes their name from a book about witches in Finland from 1500-1700 titled The Wage Of Sin Is Death.

They formed in New York in 2001 and remain Vanessa (drums), Melissa (vocals), Rachel (guitar), Barbara (guitar), and Laura (bass).

Rachel is ex-Indecision, Milhouse, and Most Precious Blood, while Laura is ex-All For Nothing and has been The Wage Of Sin's bassist since 2002.

The Wage Of Sin play TJ's, Newport on Monday, January 17, with Chariots, and The Guilliaume Seam in support.
