A man was arrested over the death of a convicted armed robber whose badly burned body was found in woodland on the Gwent border, police said today.

The body of Courtney Davies, 53, from the Rumney area of Cardiff, was found with multiple stab wounds in woods close to Staunton near Monmouth on December 20.

Gloucestershire Police launched a murder inquiry into the death of Mr Davies, who was jailed for 15 years in 1986 for two violent armed robberies at the homes of wealthy businessmen.

A force spokeswoman said: "Police yesterday arrested a 32-year-old Cardiff man on suspicion of murder in connection with the investigation into the death of Courtney Davies, whose body was found in woodland near Staunton on December 20, 2004."

The man remains in police custody in Cardiff, where he is being interviewed.
