NEWPORT County are in FA Cup action tomorrow at North Leigh and it should see them progress into the last qualifying round but boss John Cornforth is taking nothing for granted, writes Michael Gannon.

He said: "It will be a similar game to Corsham (who Newport defeated at the last stage) but we will have to improve on that performance by tightening up at the back and also being sharper going forward.

"In Jamie Moralee we have a player with real quality up front, we need to play to his strengths and get the ball to his feet.

"We didn't play particularly well last week (County drew 1-1 at Margate) but I accept that we had several players who were riddled with flu, so in the end a point wasn't too bad.

"Anything you pick up away in this league is okay because teams in the top half are going to take points off each other."

Cornforth knows that Hellenic Premier Division side North Leigh will offer up a typically non-league test with tough tackles and long balls but he insists his side will not shy away from a scrap.

He said: "The players will need to keep their heads screwed on because it is easy to get dragged into a battle.

"But I'll make sure the lads are prepared to roll their sleeves up.

"It is important to get into the next round because there is financial reward and with the Conference clubs coming in there is the possibility of decent draw."

Cornforth has now settled into this role and admitted that he has his eye on some new additions.

"I have watched about seven or eight games in the last two weeks," Cornforth said. "I've been in touch with about ten managers as well so hopefully some things can be sorted out in the next few weeks.

"I have had a look at the squad now, which I have inherited, and I am getting a picture of who I think is decent and who I think might not be good enough."

He added: "This week is a bit difficult because clubs are always reluctant to let players go during cup week.

"But I have been very active and by next week, there could be a bit of movement." County's only fitness doubt remains over midfielder Nathan Davies, who is still recovering from an ankle injury suffered against Corsham.

Squad: Freestone, Aherne-Evans, L Phillips, Davies, Morgan, Thomas, D Jones, Bowen, Williams, Moralee, Wilson-Denis, Coates, O'Sullivan, J Phillips, Passmore, G Jones.

County have arranged a "Meet the Manager" night in the social club on Thursday, October 20. Evening begins 7.30-8 pm and entry is free.

County will travel to Weymouth for their Carthium Cup first round clash on Tuesday, November 2.
