GLAMORGAN batsman Mike Powell (pictured) paid tribute to his team-mates after they secured promotion to the top tier of the Frizzell County Championship yesterday.

Despite rain decimating Glamorgan's contest with Nottinghamshire, the bowling bonus points they collected from the little play that occurred put them out of sight of their rivals.

It caps a remarkable season's double for Glamorgan who strolled to the totesport one-day title after a series of impressive displays.

They also reached the semi-finals of the Twenty20 competition and Powell is in no doubt that Glamorgan's success is richly deserved.

He told the Argus: "This promotion is a huge reward for everyone in the side and it caps off a great season for Glamorgan.

"We targeted success in the one-day and the four-day game this season and it is a credit to the lads that we achieved it.

"Counties don't win and have success without having really good players and it is also nice to see that our players are starting to get international recognition.

"Simon Jones set the ball rolling and now Alex Wharf has broken into the one-day side.

"This comes as a result of our improvements on the field, but you can't really just pick two or three players out for praise because we have fired well as a team all season.

"Players who have not received international recognition like Mark Wallace and David Hemp have been massive players for us this year and have shown the strength we have.

"We have also benefited as a team from the efforts of our senior players, Robert Croft and Matthew Maynard.

"Matthew is a terrific batsman and he has played some great innings this year for us. And Robert Croft is in the absolute form of his life at the moment, he has been superb this season.

"We are very focused now and believe we can do well in the County Championship playing in the higher division."

Powell, along with another Gwent player David Harrison, will not be allowed too much time to enjoy Glamorgan's success as they will be joining up with Aussie Rod Marsh as part of the England academy, an opportunity Powell is determined to take.

"Rod Marsh is a bit of a legend and they get a lot of specialist coaches in for the Academy training so I will be doing my best and looking to get a lot out of it," he said.
