NEW coach Mike Ruddock today promised his Welsh sides would play in the same style adopted since the last World Cup.

But unlike predecessor Steve Hansen, he said there would be an emphasis on results as well as performance.

And that went for the forthcoming tour of Argentina and South Africa, despite the fact that 13 top home internationals are unable to make the trip.

His 33-man squad, which includes three uncapped players in Newport Gwent Dragons pair Jason Forster and Peter Sidoli and Llanelli's Barry Davies, puts the emphasis on youth.

And he said the summer tour would give him the chance to see just how good they were.

"I'm really excited about the tour. I know it's going to be very challenging and demanding, but we've still got a lot of quality players there," said the former Newport Gwent Dragons coach, who has included six from his former province in his first international selection.

"It's a great opportunity to find out about some younger players who have been playing very well in the new regional structures.

"We saw the other day the exciting draw we have in the 2007 World Cup and we need to start to develop more and more strength towards the Six Nations, the Autumn Tests and the World Cup.

"So as tough as the tour's going to be, it's also going to be very exciting and let's see how these players get to grips with it."

A weakened Wales party were crushed 96-13 on their 1998 tour to South Africa when the Dragons' Percy Montgomery scored a national recored 31 points, but Ruddock said the situation was completely different this time.

"We have to look forward and not back. There are a lot of good structures in place.

"These guys are working hard in their regions and Andrew Hore (fitness coach) has demanded the highest of standards and that's starting to come through," he said.

"We still have a long way to go, particularly in the strength and power areas.

"But on this occasion we have more continuity than we had in 1998.

"The coaches then had to take over a brand new squad with very little time and with a lot of new combinations. "In terms of team moves and calls and patterns of play I'm not looking on this particular tour to suddenly come in and try to change things."

He added: "We are all here to try to get results and try to get wins. That's what international rugby's about.

"As Steve (predecessor Steve Hansen) said, 'you can't get results without a good performance' so basically we'll be trying to get big performances out of the team and try to win games. But the style of rugby Wales are playing is certainly the style I'd like us to promote and keep."
