GWENT'S David Park remained out in front in the Spanish Open after an excellent second round 65 to add to his opening 64 at Fuerteventura Golf Club.

Park, from Monmouth, was four shots ahead on 11 under par at the halfway stage of the Canarias Open de Espana.

Blackwood's Bradley Dredge was in 23rd position on 1 under after adding a 69 to his opening round of 70.

Park, looking for his second European Tour success to follow his maiden victory in the 1999 Compaq European Grand Prix, carried on where he left off on Thursday with six birdies and just one bogey to remain on course for his second tour title.

The 29-year-old won the European Grand Prix in 1999 in only his second European Tour event after losing a play-off the week before, but has not finished in the top three in 134 events since.

"I actually played better tee to green than yesterday but did not hole as many putts," said Park.

"There were quite a few chances that I didn't take so I'm very pleased to be four shots ahead.

"I don't look at leaderboards on the course so I didn't know until I finished."

Nearest challenger Cevaer carded a 67 earlier in the day to take second place on seven under, one shot ahead of Sweden's Peter Hedblom.

England's David Lynn was among four players another stroke adrift on five under, but the unfortunate Jamie Donaldson had to retire with a back injury on the 17th hole while also five under.

Cevaer claimed the 115th and final tour card from the Order of Merit in 2001 but played only six events the following season after breaking his elbow in a snowboarding accident in January 2002.

"I am a good skier so I decided to take on snowboarding and I soon found out it was totally different," said the 34-year-old.

"After an hour of struggle I started to get the hang of it and had I not had the accident I might have become very good!

"It happened on my last run after four hours. I came across a ramp that the snowboarders built to swing round and jump and I lost control."
