A NEWPORT mother is backing our campaign to get drugs dealers off the streets - after her three children were targeted by pushers.

The woman, a 38-year-old from Pill, was prompted to telephone us last night after her children were asked to peddle Class A drugs by local dealers.

She said: "We need to get these traffickers off the streets.

"Police really need to be watching them as they are a big danger to the community.

"I know people in the area who are dealing in heroin and crack cocaine.

"They are trying to get kids involved, including my own. They tried to entice three of them to sell the drugs for them.

"It makes me really angry but I have been too scared to phone the police."

Police say they are using the addresses of suspected drug dealers given by Argus readers to build intelligence and potentially carry out raids.

Since we launched our appeal to shop a dealer on Wednesday, our newsdesk has received details of 15 addresses and 12 names of suspected dealers.

We are passing on the intelligence in confidence to police, who are verifying the accuracy of the information with a view to carry out drug raids.

Newport Chief Superintendent Kevin Price said: "As a result of the contact made through the Argus, my intelligence officers throughout the division are actively developing the information provided.

"We want to set in place activity to develop the intelligence with a view to carrying out raids and arrests of offenders."

He said steps would be taken to verify the accuracy of the information.

Chief Supt Price appealed for those dealing in drugs to think again.

He said: "There is no excuse for knowingly dealing in the misery of drug trafficking and I would prefer those individuals to reflect on their activities and change their ways.

"If they choose not to change we will use every resource available to gather evidence, arrest and convict them and remove them from our streets."
