A POLITICS student faces a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of carrying out a bottle attack on a customer outside a Newport bar.

Ellis Daniel, 21, who studied at Nottingham University, smashed a bottle and lashed out at man he wrongly identified as having indecently assaulted a woman, Cardiff crown court heard.

Daniel, of Fairwater Way, Cwm-bran, admitted a charge of wounding 34-year-old father-of-one Kevin Payne but this was not accepted by the prosecution.

He denied the more serious charge of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm, but was convicted of that offence.

Daniel, a man with no previous convictions, was told by Recorder Patrick Curran "an immediate custodial sentence of some length is inevitable".

He said the jury had convicted him of a very serious offence.

The case was adjourned for reports and Daniel was remanded on bail. Prosecutor Jonathan Austin said that on August 3 Mr Payne went to the Walkabout Bar, Newport, with friends.

When he went outside Daniel was waiting, smashed a bottle and struck him in the face causing cuts and for Mr Payne to suffer shock. By attacking a customer with a broken bottle he must have intended to cause really serious harm, said Mr Austin.

Daniel said that was not true and he had no intention at any time of causing serious injuries.

After the hearing, Cwmbran delivery driver Mr Payne said: "I'm pleased with the conviction as he waited for me and as soon as he saw me come out he jumped down from a ledge and hit me."
