KIND-hearted Argus readers are rallying round an elderly Abergavenny couple whose Christmas savings were stolen by bogus officials.

Many people were shocked by our report of how Walter, also known as William, and Lilian Moore were left terrified after two men conned their way into their home and stole £300.

They had saved the money for a holiday in Paignton and for their family's Christmas presents.

Second World War veteran Mr Moore, 83, and his 80-year-old wife were badly shaken by the incident, and our front-page story in Friday's Argus - which showed a tearful Mrs Moore - prompted many readers to offer their support.

Among them was Alison Tyler, of Cwmbran, who said she and her husband, Jesse, 45, were upset to see the picture of Mrs Moore.

""Both of us were affected by the picture and story," said Mrs Tyler, who is making a donation to the couple.

"This time of the year pensioners struggle to find enough money, so this theft is sickening. We can't comprehend people doing this to pensioners, it's a cowardly thing to do."

Lisa Smith, 26, of Malpas, said her 46-year-old father, Gerard, said they had to offer money to Mr and Mrs Moore as soon as they saw the article.

She said: "It's heartbreaking to read what happened. Mr Moore fought for those people in the Second World War, and now they've repaid him by stealing from him."

Mrs Moore said of the offers: "I am very touched by it, and it is very kind of them to think of us in that way. I have always helped others and it's nice that other people think that way."

Her husband added they were slowly recovering from their ordeal, thanks to their daughter and son-in-law, and "some wonderful friends".

Three other homes in Raglan, Skenfrith and Newport were targeted on the same day as the Moores' - October 28 - and police believe the same men carried out all four raids, pretending to be from the gas or water board to gain entry.

Both men were in their mid-twenties, about 5ft 10in tall, with short hair. One wore a navy blue fleece and both had Irish accents.
