A CWMBRAN man who suffered a serious head injury in an alleged assault outside a Newport city centre pub has died.
Police confirmed today that John Morris, who was aged 45, died on Friday night at Swansea's Morriston Hospital.
Detectives say Mr Morris was involved in an incident outside Yates's Wine Lodge, in High Street, shortly after midnight on Sunday, November 2. He was taken to Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital by an ambulance crew, but was later transferred to Morriston Hospital because his injuries were so severe.
Detective Inspector Dave Edwards, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are still appealing for witnesses who may have seen a fight between several men in the Cambrian Road area of Newport between 12.15am and 12.30am on November 2."
Gareth Harry, who was working as the manager of Yates's Wine Lodge at the time of the incident, told the Argus that his doormen and other staff had not noticed anything outside the pub as they were so busy inside.
A man arrested shortly after the incident, Mark Hultberg, aged 31, of Delius Close, Alway, Newport, appeared before the city's magistrates last Monday charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on Mr Morris and affray.
No pleas were entered and he is now due to re-appear at Newport magistrates court again on Thursday.
Police are taking advice from the Crown Prosecution.
Anyone who can help with the investigation should contact Newport Central CID on 01633 244999.
