PEOPLE living on a Newport estate have given the thumbs up to some exciting plans for the future at a series of celebration events.

A lunch-time party for toddlers and a fish supper for pensioners were two of the events organised by Gaer Community Net-work (GCN).

It was commemorating the launch of its community vision and local action plans.

"This marks the culmination of much hard work and we are now on the verge of making our plans and vision into reality," said Suzi Pari , of GCN. "Work has involved extensive consultation with the community to find out what they wanted for the future of the Gaer."

The first event was a fish and chip supper at Gaer Junior School with entertainment by the Hennessy Trio as part of the Nightout scheme supported by the Arts Council of Wales.

Newport's mayor, Councillor Ray Truman, AM Rosemary Butler and local councillors joined the senior residents of the estate.

School staff were involved in preparing and running the event and meals were served by Gaer Guides.

Friendly door-to-door transport service by A&B Community Transport added to the enjoyment and ensured high take-up

Councillor Truman presented a community award, made by pupils of Gaer Infants School, to Jack Ritter, chairman of GCN in recognition of all his hard work and service to the community.

A Hallowe'en disco was also held at Gaer Community Centre for youngsters aged between 10 and 16 while under-fives and their carers enjoyed a lunch-time party.

While the youngsters were entertained by Jo Jingles and story-telling from Newport Library Service, the adults enjoyed make-overs and gifts from the Body Shop.

It was organised in partnership with Newport Sure Start who have set up a Family Support Group in the Gaer as part of the Communities First initiative.
