BUILDING more than one hundred flats on the site of a former Newport golf course would cause traffic mayhem, say angry residents.

Developers Taylor Woodrow want to build 101 two-bed apartments on part of the former Tred-egar Park golf course, in Bassaleg Road, Newport. But there are fears the development could lead to more than 200 more vehicles using busy Bassaleg Road.

The development would put 135 car spaces and three- storey blocks of flats on the 1.57 hectare site bordered by Bassaleg Road, the railway line and the M4.

David Lloyd, of Glasllwch View, was among the 13 households who wrote to the council to protest.

He told the Argus yesterday: "101 flats with up to two cars each will be bedlam. Bassaleg Road is very busy and it's already difficult for us to turn on to it.

"This might be a small step to developing the rest of the golf course site. "And three-storey blocks won't be in keeping with the appearance of the area."

Ann Oakey, of Glasllwch View, said: "We are very concerned about the traffic. The road is very busy at rush hour and it will be horrendous with the extra cars.

"It seems a shame as there's so much wildlife that will be lost if there is development.

"People have got to live somewhere but surely another site could be found. I don't think there's a need for these flats."

Another resident, Adrienne Faulkner, also wrote to the council's planning department. She said: "Bassaleg Road is only a single carriageway and the congestion is already terrible.

"The landscape and view will be spoiled by another eyesore as more and more housing creeps in."

Resident Paul Bartlett said people living opposite the development were unhappy with the plans and feared increases in traffic and crime.

The council planning committee agreed not to approve or reject the scheme until Rogerstone Community Council have returned their opinion after meeting on November 5.
