A £90,000 plan aims to end the nuisance caused by car cruisers at a Cwmbran leisure spot.

Young drivers are congregating during the evenings and causing a nuisance at Llanyravon Boating Lake car park, Cwmbran, prompting a spate of complaints from locals and people using the park.

Colin Evans, clerk to Croesyceiliog and Llany-ravon community council told the Argus: "Members of the public are always complaining about the anti-social behaviour.

"It includes driving cars about at night, playing ghetto blasters and revving up engines."

Now Torfaen council officers have come up with proposals for new measures to drive out the car cruisers.

The suggestions, which are the subject of a consultation exercise, include:

* Introducing speed bumps to reduce vehicle speeds

* Installing a bank and ditch to the grassed area adjacent to Llanfrechfa Way to manage access

* Creating car parking next to the existing car park, to provide an overspill car park in a field currently used by the Community Farm.

*Building a bank and ditch to the perimeter of the existing and proposed car parks to prevent vehicle access to pitches.

A spokesman for Torfaen council said: "Young people in large groups are parking their cars on the grassy knoll, next to the car park, and, for example, playing very loud music.

"The difficulty is it's such a large area which makes it hard to restrict access without spending a lot of extra money.

"We have also looked at what can be done to alter the environment and hope to carry out a number of initiatives which we hope will have a positive effect."

Local police say they too are keen to help resolve the problem. Chief inspector John Oliver, of Gwent Police, said: "The local authority will be making some physical cha-nges to the car park to prevent inappropriate driving and we have made efforts to increase police patrols in the area and to respond quickly to any complaints we receive."

He added police will also be exercising their powers under the Police Reform Act. This involves warning people acting inappropriately and where necessary temporarily seizing their vehicle.
