THE University of Wales College, Newport, is ranked the "worst in the country", according to new figures.

The UWCN props up the Sunday Times University Guide league table, which assesses all the UK's institutions and ranks them on seven key criteria.

The guide praises Newport's recruitment policy in attracting students from lower social classes, with over a quarter of students from deprived areas.

But it adds: "Its teaching record is the main reason for UWCN sinking to the foot of our league table this year.

"While all subjects have been rated satisfactory, none has been rated excellent."

The study also reveals the university has an above-average drop-out rate, with 26% of students not finishing their studies - the highest in Wales, along with Lampeter and the North East Wales Institute, in Wrexham. The national average is 17-18%.

The criteria used in the Sunday Times list contrasts with an earlier study in the Times Education Supplement last year, which put the institution in the top half of their table for research.

The TES also acknowledged UWCN as a leader in widening access to higher education, and ranked it among the best in the country for attracting pupils from state schools.
