VANDALS smashed a Newport couple's car twice in just four days. Shocked Gail and Brian Moss saw a gang of youths throw a stone through the back window of their Citroen AX outside their home on Chepstow Road on Monday evening.

But after paying over £100 to have the car repaired yesterday, vandals struck again, smashing their new window overnight.

A despairing Mr Moss said: "I just don't know what to do. We spent all our money getting the window fixed and then exactly the same thing has happened again.

"We have to find another £100 from somewhere now." It is for the innocent victims of car crime, like the Moss family, that we have launched our Car Safe campaign.

We want tougher sentences for repeat offenders and reduced car crime figures through public awareness.

The first attack took place just after 7pm on Monday, when Mr Moss chased after the gang, but the youths escaped.

He said: "It happened in broad daylight at about 7.10pm on Monday. It was our wedding anniversary.

"There were five of them, about 14-years-old, standing about 10ft to 15 ft away.

"My wife saw them throw a stone and smash the window, she was really distraught. It was pure vandalism."

But the couple awoke this morning to discover vandals had struck again. Mr Moss said: "I just don't know what to do.

"We picked it up yesterday, and at midnight last night it was fine. But when we woke up this morning we found exactly the same thing had happened. "It's just a G-registration Citroen AX. There was nothing in it of any good to them, just a radio that's 15 to 20-years-old."

Mr Moss said he reported a possible suspect for the first crime to the police after a passer-by thought he recognised one of the vandals. If anyone has any information on the incident they should contact Newport police on 01633 244999.
