NEWPORT police are warning there could be a serious accident if off-road bikers continue to use the Millennium fields in Pill, where children play.

Inspector Jim Baker, from Pill police, is appealing for anyone with information about the bikers to contact the station so they can be dealt with.

"If people are consistently riding up there we will seize their motorcycles and they will be prosecuted," he said.

"We will be overtly videoing the area during the summer and will be taking steps to identify anybody we find riding motorcycles there.

"We refuse to use off-road bikes ourselves on safety grounds at this stage."

Inspector Baker said: "We are concerned that during the summer, with the number of children in the park, that there will be an accident.

"You only need someone to lose a little bit of control. "No accidents have been reported so far, but somebody will be hurt if this continues.

"So far this year we've had over 30 calls about it, but that's only when people have been bothered to ring in.

"Without doubt there have been far more incidents. "We have seen people over there ourselves when there haven't been calls.

"We know it's a problem that is exacerbated during the summer months because more motorcycles are about in the fine weather.

"We appeal for the public to let us know when this is happening and let us know the registration numbers and if they know who's doing it.

"It helps if we get a description of what the person is wearing so we can look for someone in those clothes.

"There are a large number of people doing it and they must be local to find the fields."

Inspector Baker said Newport council was powerless to stop the bikers because the fields were a designated open leisure facility and they could not fence it off.

Anyone with information about the bikers should contact Pill police station on 01633 244999.
