The Olde Oak, Ruskin Avenue, Rogerstone

THE Olde Oak may not, on first appearances, seem like an ideal eating place but once inside the spacious restaurant area you are in for a treat of good home-cooked food.

The Olde Oak is a pub with a large, separate eating area which gives diners the opportunity to have a quieter evening.

The menu is full of traditional, home-cooked food at reasonable prices and there should be something for most tastes.

For starters I chose potato skins with a salad, at £3.99. It was tasty and a good start for any meal.

My partner chose calamari, at £4.25, and again there was plenty to enjoy

Both I and my partner picked the mixed grill for our main course, at £8.99 each.

It comes with a small salad and chips or a jacket potato, and proved too much for both myself and my partner. The quality was good.

Despite the extremely filling main course both my partner and I, after a short break, felt we had to try the dessert menu.

The selection was small, but we were still quite full so we decided to share a chocolate pudding with cream.

The dessert was just the right size for both of us and also good value at £2.99. We finished the evening off with two coffees.

The bill for the meal and all drinks came to a very reasonable £37.69.

An enjoyable evening out in relaxed surroundings.
