MORE than 40 people cycled from Brecon to Cwmbran last weekend to raise money for sick tot Amber Hartland.

The cyclists raised more than £1,000 for Amber through sponsorship, on behalf of the Cwmbran- based charity, Community Spirit 2000.

And after the 40-mile ride some people were left feeling pretty saddle-sore.

Ray Teague, 48, of Pontnewydd, Cwmbran, chairman of Community Spirit, said: "It was hard work, and the muscles were aching a bit the next day I can tell you! But it was all worth it. We had a very enjoyable day, with plenty of pitstops at pubs."

Organiser Mark Bexley, 49, arranged the ride, and locals at the Top Ridge pub in Pontnewydd, the unofficial home of the charity, nominated to give the money to Cwmbran infant Amber Hartland after reading about her plight in the Argus.

Amber, two, and also from Cwmbran, has infantile Tay-Sachs, a rare genetic condition which means she could die by the age of four.

Her parents are trying to raise money for life-saving treatment. Mr Teague said: "Amber's story tugged at everyone's heart strings. Her parents must have been through so much. We just thought, where better to donate our money than to her cause?"
