NEWPORT dad Paul Lewis has won the May Swalec/Argus Local Hero award for his support and compassion to a family who lost their son in a tragic crash.

The father-of-four, pictured, was nominated for the support he gave to grieving parents Debbie and Thomas Evans when their son, Kieron, seven, was killed.

Kieron, of Playford Crescent, Ringland, was run over as he played near his home last year.

As Kieron lay injured, Paul Lewis, 42, ran to his aid and comforted him until the ambulance arrived.

He stayed with Kieron in hospital for two weeks, taking time off work to be with him - even though he did not know the little boy or had never met his family.

Tragically, Kieron did not survive his injuries. But as a way of showing their gratitude to Mr Lewis, Kieron's mum, Debbie Evans, nominated him for our Local Hero award.

And she was delighted he had won the accolade.

She said: "I think Paul really deserves it. One minute we didn't know him, and the next he's giving us help and support 24 hours a day. He's been there for us ever since."

Mr Lewis said: "It's great to win the award. It's something for Kieron. I hope he's looking down on us right now and smiling.

"The report brought all the memories flooding back. It was a bit difficult for me, but to be thanked by the Evans in this way is great.

"Since the nomination people have been coming up to me in the street and shaking my hand. My friends knew what I did, but they didn't realise it was as tragic as that."

Former boxer Mr Lewis, who now works as a railway welder, has four children of his own, Danielle, 17, Luke, 16, Dex, 11, and Kirk, ten. He lives in Chepstow Road with his partner Alison Lane, aged 39.

Mr Lewis added that he will speak to Debbie and Thomas before deciding which charity to donate his £100 cheque to.
