A MAN died today in a horrific car crash in Newport. The accident happened just after 1.30am, on the A4042 between the Croes-y-Mywlach and Grove Park roundabouts on the Newport to Pontypool road just past the Brynglas Tunnels.

The road was closed as emergency services worked to free two people, believed from Newport, trapped in the wreckage of the blue Volkswagen Golf - the only vehicle involved.

The road was due to remain closed until noon. Drivers entering and leaving Newport were forced to find alternative routes this morning, causing massive tailbacks.

Police say the car was travelling southbound towards Newport when it collided with the central reservation.

An ambulance spokesman confirmed two people were taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, one of them with serious head injuries.

No further details of the victims were released as the Argus went to press. Two fire engines, one special rescue tender and two ambulances attended the scene. The A4042 road was closed throughout the night and was not expected to reopen before noon today.

An AA Roadwatch spokesman said the crash caused major tailbacks on the A4042 but traffic was running smoothly on Malpas Road.

He added congestion was lower than normal because of the half- term holidays. Inspector Pete Davies told the Argus: "The road will not reopen before noon and it could be even longer than that because the crash site examiners are having to come from Hampshire.

"They are specialists in crash barriers," he added. "It will have a knock-on effect with the traffic and alternative routes have been set up." Gwent Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with any information should call 01633 838111.
