NEWPORT have strung two successive victories together, compared with Ebbw Vale's two defeats, but coach Leigh Jones insists he will not underestimate his former club next Saturday night, writes Robin Davey.

It will be Jones' first visit to Eugene Cross Park since he switched Gwent clubs, though he was WRU District A director of rugby in between posts.

"We will pay Ebbw Vale the respect they deserve," said Jones after the win against Pontypridd.

"A lot of sides underestimate Ebbw Vale particularly up there, like Llanelli recently. If you don't respect them they are quite capable of turning you over.

"Beating Edinburgh and Pontypridd augurs well for Ebbw Vale, it's about a bit of luck sometimes and ours seems to have changed.

"It was a great relief Pontypridd came here with such a weakened side and we'll catch Neath next week days after the Celtic League final against Munster, so it seems our luck is turning.

"I was still pleased with the manner of our victory against Pontypridd. We looked a dangerous side and scores went begging which I'm sure will be taken next time."

Jones is not about to throw youngsters into the fray as he goes in search of more victories.

"This is not the time to blood youngsters. We need to get wins, it's about that and gaining confidence," he said.

"It was a huge relief to see Percy (Montgomery) put 80 percent of his kicks over which also took the pressure off Shane Howarth's shoulders and allowed him to play. We chatted about it and Percy was keen to take it on, he was waiting for the responsibility."

It was the first time for Montgomery to take the kicks in a long time, though he admitted he had been practising in training.

"I was happy with my performance and will be as long as I'm kicking 70-80 percent of them. You always get nerves, but you've just got to get on and do it," he said.
