TORFAEN council has been praised for the way it consults people.

The Audit Commission in Wales praised the council for its efforts to consult local people on plans for the county's future in a recently published report.

Local authorities and other public-sector bodies are required by law to consult people who use their services.

The Commission said Torfaen's Big T2 event was "a particularly strong example of an approach that has got people interested in local policy".

The Big T2, held in May last year, was aimed at encouraging local people to decide how they would like to be involved in influencing plans for Torfaen.

More than 400 people attended the council- organised event, and results from exhibitions and polls have been incorporated into Torfaen's Community Strategy.

Chris Koehli, district auditor for the Audit Commission, said: "For public services to be successful, it is essential that the people who use them have an input into how they are designed and run."
