Supermarket developers are queuing to trade in Newport as the city starts to benefit from news that the central area is to under go a £100 million transformation.
A consultants' report commissioned by the council has identified scope for one more supermarket although it has not been decided where this will be.
Two 'edge-of-city' applications for supermarkets are already being discussed and Sainsbury says it wants to move to a new site in Crindau and transfer staff from premises in Shaftesbury which are now too small.
Business Argus can reveal today that a further two applications are being lodged for the Crindau site by Bristol company Second-Site Property, which owns the gas works land.
Second-Site is owned by National Grid Transco.
The applications are for either a DIY-style retail warehouse or for a new Sainsbury's store. Like Sainsbury's own scheme this envisages transfer of staff from the existing store.
