"IT'S not about kicking it's about caring," that's how Everton Smith sums up the philosophy of his Black Belt Academy. He believes it's just as important to help people become happy and healthy individuals as well as learning martial arts skills.

The 4th Dan Wado Ryu Karate instructor has gained World and European titles and is now keen to pass on his skills and attitude to the next generation.

Mr Smith, 40, said: "The school is a fun and friendly environment where children and adults can practise the arts of karate and kickboxing. Not only that but we hope to teach them the life skills they need to be a successful member of society.

"Communities these days are suffering from an increase in crime, drug use, social disorder and a lack of morals and beliefs, that's why we need to provide a character education programme. We need to give people positive messages about themselves and what they are capable of achieving.

"You could say that we are trying to build a better community and student at the same time. We focus on the mental benefits of karate as well as the physical. It is easy to see the improvement to your health, speed and power but the other benefits are just as powerful. We show students how to focus, improve discipline, manners, self-control, confidence and respect for themselves and others.

"We can produce champions which has been borne out by the success of our members at the recent World Championships. But we also want to break the myth that karate is just a physically aggressive activity for men and make people realise that in our school it's not about kicking it's about caring."

Students are offered a free introductory period and then if you choose to stay on a carefully structured programme prepares you for the challenges of gradings. Everton has trained in kickboxing since the early 1980s. He combines this more streetwise form of martial arts with the traditional.

The school also offers cardio kickboxing which is the fastest growing fitness pastime in the UK. Combining aerobics with martial arts movements these high tempo sessions are done to music and are the ideal way to lose weight and combat stress. The academy conducts sessions in Pontypool, Newport, Lliswery and is looking at setting up a permanent centre in Newport.
