GERMAN Shepherd Max is top dog at his master's workplace in Chepstow after scooping an animal charity prize.

He was runner-up in the Top Dog at Work awards organised by animal charity The Blue Cross, a nationwide competition run as part of their annual Take Your Dog To Work awards.

Max's owner, Nick Samuel, of Blethyn Close, Mynyddbach, near Caldicot - a carpenter for Monmouthshire County Council - has taken the eight-year-old dog to work for the last two years.

After careful judging, Max was commended for his loveable, friendly nature and enthusiasm. Nick, 45, said: "When I heard the news I was very surprised but really happy. "I thought the competition would be so tough and I didn't think we'd stand a chance."

Max's prize is a month's supply of dog food donated by the event sponsors, Pedigree.
