A NEWPORT mum whose son was in Bali at the time of the bomb blast has told of her relief after speaking to him on the phone.

Anne Hurley, of Wentloog, feared her youngest son, Kevin, (pictured) was injured in the explosion that devastated part of the tourist island and claimed the lives of more than 180 people. He was on holiday in Bali with his girlfriend - and Mrs Hurley learned of the bomb blast after her daughter, Kim Percy, telephoned her.

She said: "I knew Kevin was in Bali, and was so worried that something had happened to him that I just had to phone him immediately to check he was OK. I can't explain how relieved I was to hear his voice on the phone."

But there was also heartache for the family this week - as Mrs Hurley prepared for the funeral of her 18-month-old grandson, Will, who died from a mystery virus. Kevin, 32, a quantity surveyor, had gone to Bali from Australia, where he was visiting his girlfriend.

He learned of his nephew's tragic death while on holiday. Mrs Hurley said Kevin was in the Sari Club ten minutes before the bombing, but luckily was persuaded to go for a meal with friends to a bar 50 yards away.

"All Kevin could see when he left was carnage and bodies. He thought it had been a gas explosion and he tried to help as many people as he could," she said.

She added: "I only realised how lucky Kevin had been when I saw how many others had lost their lives, and I only relaxed properly when I got the text message, saying Kevin had arrived back in Sydney."

He is expected back in Britain in December. Mrs Hurley phoned her older son, Mark, Will's father, to let him know Kevin was safe. She said: "I telephoned him straightaway to let him know that Kevin was all right and so he wouldn't be worrying."

Mark and Jayne Hurley, Will's parents, who live in Tamworth, made the traumatic decision to switch off their son's life support machine on October 6 - two days after he had been admitted to hospital with a virus.

The tot's funeral service will be held tomorrow, in Tamworth.
