THE tidal wave of discontent washing through Welsh rugby claimed another victim yesterday - Les Williams.

It's reported that Williams is set to quit his post as Welsh Rugby Union vice chairman.

The news comes just five days before an extraordinary meeting of all 239 union clubs will decide the future of Welsh rugby.

And as Williams revealed he would not be standing for re-election on the WRU's general committee in May, he fired a double barrel-load of parting shots to his soon-to-be former colleagues.

The 70-year-old, who has sat on the committee for nine years, tells them a huge shake up is needed to revitalise the Welsh game.

He believes that the union did not 'control' the onset of professionalism and that committee members, have to follow his example and go.

"I have made up my mind," said Williams. "I just hope the clubs realise there is a need for some fresh blood."

And he claimed: "We don't need more than eight people to run the professional game. "If change is stifled Welsh rugby will go down the same road as soccer."

No one from the WRU was available to confirm or deny the report last night.

*Scotland's Scott Murray and John Leslie missed training in the build up to their clash with Wales.

Head coach Ian McGeechan is optimistic that both will be fit enough to play in Saturday's Cardiff match.
