A POLICE investigation is under way after the remains of what is believed to be two human feet were found on the banks of the River Severn.

Two fishermen in Sudbrook, near Caldicot, made the gruesome discovery at 8pm on Saturday.

The men found a trainer which was caked in mud, and contained the bones of a foot. Gwent Police searched the area and yesterday morning found what they believe to be the remains of the other foot, also in its trainer.

Police believe the feet had been washed up during a recent high tide, and, as the Argus went to press, said they were keeping an open mind as to how and why the remains ended up in Sudbrook.

Both the feet and the area where they were found have been examined by Gwent Police scenes-of-crime officers and are currently being inspected by a pathologist, who was expected to give the results of his report later today.

Inspector David Moses, from Caldicot police station, said: "Two trainers have been found and are being looked at because there is a possibility of human remains in them.

"We are currently waiting for the results of reports before this can be confirmed. The shoes are with the pathologist at the moment. Gwent Police's scenes-of- crime officers have also been looking into it."

The pathologist was also expected to confirm in his report whether the person is a man or woman, and how long they have been in the water.

The Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) was called out yesterday morning to search the river near the scene of the discovery for more remains, but were unable to find any.
