THE daughter of former rugby star Terry Cobner downed 35 pain killers and half a bottle of vodka, then threw herself from a window, an inq-uest heard yesterday.

Rachel Sian Cobner, 27, had suffered with depression for several years and had been treated as both an in-patient and outpatient at local hospitals, the hearing at Tredegar magistrates court was told.

She had attempted suicide twice before, three years ago and earlier this year. Her sister Bethan told the inquest: "I think the first one may have been attention-seeking, but I don't think the second one was."

On July 18, Ms Cobner was in the flat in Osborne Road, Pontypool, where she lived alone, when a passer-by saw her standing on the windowsill, 40 feet up.

He called the police, but she threw herself from the window, fracturing her pelvis in three places and a rib as she hit the ground, the inquest heard.

She was taken to hospital, but her family were told she should easily recover. She failed to provide an explanation for the 'accident', only saying that she "hoped people wouldn't think that she'd fallen".

On July 25, medical staff spotted that she was having liver problems and feared an overdose or hepatitis.

Four days later, just hours before her death, she admitted to overdosing on co-codamol, but nothing could be done as it was more than 12 hours since she had taken the tablets. She died from liver failure.

A post mortem examination showed she had also suffered a cerebral contusion. Her sister Bethan said: "I left her at about 8pm on the Saturday night and as far as I was concerned, she was poorly, but I didn't think that she wouldn't survive the night." Gwent coroner David Bowen determined she had killed herself while she was depressed, adding: "This was certainly not an accidental death.

"In this tragic case, I am sure that it was Miss Cobner's intention to kill herself, as she not only took a considerable quantity of tablets that she concealed from all those around her, but also jumped out of a flat window as if to make sure."
