THIS band just can't let go of Newport - Napalm Death, the world's fastest and most endearing thrash band on the planet.

There was only room for one band like Napalm Death to survive the 20th century. Extreme Noise Terror, one contemporary among others, fell by the wayside as Napalm Death soldiered on with new line-ups, new ideas and more and more speed.

The happy brummies played TJ's earlier this year, a happening the band's bassist and oldest member, Shane Embury, has absolutely no memory of whatsoever. "It's all a bit of a blur really," he said. "I can't remember the last TJ's gig at all. I've lived a good 60 years inside of 34!"

It was the tour to promote Enemy of the Music Business, the umpteenth slice of insanely fast vitriol from the band.

It was fast, but the next one's going to beat it, says Shane. "Hopefully you'll see us go a little bit faster on the next one and start bringing in really weird guitar pieces," said Shane.

"We've been listening to quite a bit of Black Metal lately. We'll try and mix that in with the old hardcore Discharge sound, just so that when we play fast we'll have some interesting riffs going; discordant riffs - the one rhythm will be chugging along and there will perhaps be another guitar harmony on the top.

"When I say harmony, not necessarily melodic, just something that's kind of abrasive to hear. The more twisted the better - the nastier the better."

Napalm Death play TJ's, Newport on Thursday, November 29. Tickets are £8.
