ONE of the three men jailed for the murder of a South Wales newsagent is claiming £1.1m in compensation for wrongful imprisonment.

Three men, including Darren Hall of Newport, were jailed for the murder of Philip Saunders who was found dead on the doorstep of his home in Fairwater, Cardiff, on October 12, 1987.

Mr Hall was jailed along with Ellis Sherwood and the man who is now making the claim, Michael O'Brien (pictured), both from Cardiff.

Mr O'Brien's lawyers are expected to submit their report to the Home Office today. The men, who became known as the Cardiff Newsagent Three, were released on bail in 1999 after the Criminal Cases Review Commission referred the case back to the Court of Appeal.

Mr O'Brien is understood to have already received £175,000 from the government. A Home Office spokeswoman said this morning that final claim papers had not been received from Mr O'Brien's lawyers.

She said interim payments were normally made when the Home Secretary decided that compensation was due. The exact figures for compensation are made by an independent assessor.
